Apache Dominates Carnegie on Senior Night

Apache, OK – The Warriors had their final regular season game of the season Friday night against the Carnegie Wildcats. It was senior night in Apache and the Warriors put on a show.

The game started fast as Apache got on the board just 19-seconds into the game with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Triton Ivy to Brayden Curry. After the 2-point conversion, the score was 8-0.

The Warrior defense created three straight turnovers and allowed the offense to work with a short field the majority of first quarter. Apache jumped out to a 30-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Head Coach of the Warriors, Larry McDaniel, had this to say about his defense’s performance and their play all year.

            “I’m really proud of our defense. They’ve stepped up all year when players went down with injuries… they’ve played well every week. We need to carry this momentum into the playoffs.”

Carnegie was able to find the endzone halfway through the second quarter with a short run from their quarterback Heston Harrison. They would get a 2-point conversion and make the score 30-8.

The Apache offense slowed down in the second, but that Warrior defense proved tough once again. The Wildcats were able to drive the ball deep into Apache territory with less than thirty seconds to go, but Reese Sylvester was able to add their fourth takeaway of the first half with an interception in the end zone to close the half. Apache took a 30-8 lead heading into the locker room.

The second half was much of the same. Apache would score two more times. One score came at the 1:04 mark of the third quarter, courtesy of Dakota Roberts on a pass from Ivy. The next score, just a mere 22-seconds later, courtesy of a pic six from Brayden Curry. He also had a huge night returning punts for the Warriors.

The final highlight of the game came from the Warriors’ sixth turnover of the game and third interception. This time it was the freshman, Houston Herrin, who would grab the takeaway to finish the game. The Warriors won the ball game 44-8.

McDaniel spoke about his team and their preparation for next week.

            “The kids are excited, and I am proud of our team… but when you get to this point, if you have an off night, you go home. We’ve struggled all year long, this is a season where injuries hurt us, but we will be ready.”

Senior wide receiver Brayden Curry also spoke about his team and his performance.

            “It is just all about working hard and giving it your all. Especially on senior night. Coach always talks about the next man up and we take that to heart. Always have to get better and better, work harder and harder.”

This win gives Apache a record of 5-5, 4-2 in district play. The Warriors will head to either Hooker or Fairview next Friday for the first round of the Class A playoffs.

Battle of the Wichita’s is Back

Elgin, OK – After a year of Covid and no Cache versus Elgin game, the 2021 Battle of the Wichita’s did not disappoint.

The Elgin Owls, 3-6 (2-4), have seen some flashes of greatness this year. The Owls beat Anadarko and Weatherford earlier this season but have also struggled. Heading into Friday night’s game Elgin had lost three straight. The Bulldogs, 2-7 (0-7), have also been on a downhill slope after starting the year off with two wins over 5A schools, but losing seven in a row since that point.

The game began with a blocked punt in the end zone as Cache would take an early 6-0 lead with 9:05 left in the first quarter. Defense would be a factor for both teams throughout the game.

Elgin would later score after a solid four-minute drive courtesy of quarterback Tres Lorah. The Owls took a 7-6 lead late in the first. Lorah, in the second quarter, launched a 43-yard pass to receiver Michael Adesola, a sophomore from the Bahamas who has only played football for two years, to take a 14-6 lead with 9:55 remaining in the first half.

The Cache defense would bounce back and create a turnover on downs on a fourth and eight, but that victory was short lived as Elgin Owl C.J. Underwood dropped a Cache ball carrier in the end zone with 1:45 to go in the half and take a 16-6 lead. Lorah would throw another touchdown with less than a minute to go to receiver Treyvon Crabtree to make it a 23-6 ball game at halftime.

Head Coach of the Owls, Chalmer Wyatt, had this to say about his defense.

“We built some steam defensively last week, and our kids play so hard. Defensively, that is part of it.”

Wyatt continued to praise his team saying they played complimentary football.

“Sometimes it is the offense’s turn, other times it is the defense that makes plays. Our kids played well.”

The second half was a defensive battle. Both teams not allowing a single point in the third quarter. Cache was able to finally crack that Owl defense with a touchdown pass from Tyler Miles to Jaylen Niedo. The bulldogs would cut the lead to eleven points with 11:16 remaining in the fourth.

The Bulldogs would get within a score as they kicked a field goal with just over six minutes remaining in the game.

The Bulldog defense came up clutch when they forced an interception with 2:30 remaining in the game. The Owls defense also stepped up in a big spot and forced a turnover on downs to give Lorah and the offense a chance to seal the game… and he delivered. Lorah scored with less than two minutes to go and extended the Owls’ lead to 15-points at 30-15.

The Elgin defense had the final word of the night. Cache was deep in their own territory and trying to get a quick score. Michael Asedola, you read that right, would intercept a pass and take it to the house with 1:19 remaining and put his mark on a historic rivalry.

The jersey that is being held up reads “Beat Cache”. It is an old uniform from the 1990’s that Elgin wore against their rival.

Elgin won the game 37-15 and brought back the Gold Ball. This was their first win over Cache since their overtime win in 2017.

Wyatt spoke highly of his team and about what this means for the program.

Elgin will face Chickisha on the road next week to finish the season.

Cache will face Weatherford at home next Friday.

Elk City stomps Cache, 52-7

Cache, OK – Thursday night saw the Elk City Elks head south to face the Cache Bulldogs. Elk City came in at 6-1, 3-1 in district play, while Cache has struggled after starting the season with two wins over 5A schools.

Elk City came out firing on all cylinders and took an early 10-0 lead in the first quarter, and they never looked back. The Elks worked with short fields all night and took full advantage offensively. This team, for the last couple years, has been down. At one point, they were on a twenty plus game losing streak. This season has been one to remember.

Head coach of the Elks, Dave Meadows, had this to say about his team’s performance and the journey they have been on.

            “Our kids have come a million miles… we made progress last year, but we got hit with Corona Virus twice, two ten day stretches of not practicing together, it wasn’t easy’, said Meadows, “but this year, they have their eyes set on bigger goals… but I’m not done with them yet.”

Cache struggled all night on both sides of the ball. However, to start the second half, the Bulldogs were able to force Elk City’s first punt of the game. The Elks shutout the Bulldogs for three quarters, but thanks to an unsportsmanlike penalty from Elk City, the Bulldogs were able to drive the field and score with 3:12 to go in the game.

Elk City’s offense was fueled by the running backs, Jason Crouse and Cooper Garbarino, who both had huge games. Crouse scored twice and had a 68-yard touchdown run. Garbarino sealed the game with a 72-yard touchdown run on the first possession after the kickoff from Cache.

Elk City is fighting for second place in 4A, District 1, and will face district leader and undefeated Clinton next week to stay alive in the district race. That game is set for 7 p.m. at Clinton.

Cache will face long time rival Elgin next week and is still looking for their first district win. The Battle for the Wichita’s takes place in Elgin at 7 p.m.

MacArthur and Noble battle it out in a big district game, Mac wins 47-37

Noble, OK – Class 5A, District 1 saw a major match up on the schedule and Friday was no disappointment. The undefeated Lawton Macarthur Highlanders had a date with the Noble Bears. Noble, 5-2 (3-1), came into the game with only one loss and looked to remain in a three-way battle for first place in the district. Led by star quarterback, Colin Fisher, who is committed to the University of Arkansas for baseball, the Bears seemed poised to knock the undefeated Highlanders off course.

The game began fast as Noble took less than three minutes to find the end zone and take an early touchdown lead. MacArthur didn’t hesitate either and Isaiah Gray, Mac’s standout running back, would scamper for his first touchdown of the night and tie the ball game up with 6:44 remaining in the quarter. Gray had a huge night, but we can get to that in a moment.

The Highlander defense struggled early but was able to cause the game’s first turnover after a costly pass interreference call set Noble up inside the 20-yard line. The defender who was flagged was also the defender, Johnathan Love, who intercepted the ball and put the ball back into the hands of the “Flash” himself, Isaiah Gray. Just a few moments later, Gray would take it 54 yards to the house and give Mac a 13-7 lead with 3:44 to go in the first quarter. The Bears answered quickly and regained the lead late in the first on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Fisher to Brandon Harper. The score after the first 12 minutes was 14-13, Noble.

The second quarter began with both defenses appearing to be settling in. The Bears forced MacArthur into their first three and out and the Highlanders forced a turnover on downs on a Noble fourth and nine. The Bears would get the ball right back on a fumble inside the twenty-yard line and would score a few plays later courtesy of running back Colin Thomas, making it 20-13 in the second quarter.

The very next drive, Gray would score his third touchdown of the night. His second 50+ yard rushing score would bring MacArthur back within one point, 21-20. The Highlander defense would cause another Noble turnover, but to no avail as the offense petered out another three and out.

The Bear’s final score of the half came from an impressive, three-minute drive that left less than a minute on the clock. The score was 28-20, Noble, with :57 remaining in the half. With all the momentum going their way, an eight-point lead over a very solid Highlander team, feeling confident heading into the half, they just had to not kick it to #4. They did. Gray took the following kickoff 60 plus yards and got Mac right back in it. The score at the half: 28-27 Noble.

Head coach of the Highlanders, Brett Manning, said after the game that, “We weren’t happy in the first half about how we defended them… but we were able to make some adjustments.”

After halftime, both defenses really appeared to settle down and begin to have an impact as the first score of the second half came halfway through the third quarter when quarterback of the Highlanders, Gage Graham, found wide receiver, Vaughn Poppe, in the corner of the end zone to regain the lead at 33-28 after a failed two-point conversion with 6:28 remaining in the third quarter.

The MacArthur defense would create Noble’s third turnover of the game with a tipped pass from cornerback Jaidyn McBroom that was eventually intercepted by Dominic Collins. The play was ruled dead, even though the football never hit the ground, but the call was overturned, and Mac set up shop on their own 27-yard line. The Highlanders would drive the length of the field and punch it in from the one-yard line to go up by fourteen, 28-40, with 4:32 remaining in the third.

Devin Bush would rumble his way to the end zone from 48 yards out and extend their lead even more, 28-47, with under a minute to go in the third.

The Mac defense showed up big time in the fourth quarter with two huge fourth down stops. One, a fourth and goal from the one-yard line, and the other, a fourth and nine stop right after the offense gave up a safety due to a penalty in the end zone. Mac still led 30-47 with just under eight minutes to go in the game.

Isaiah Gray saw his fifth touchdown of the game wiped off the board due to a holding penalty. This stalled another long MacArthur drive and would allow Noble a chance to score. The Bears scored midway through the fourth to cut the lead to ten, 37-47. Mac’s offense stalled again, and the Bears threatened to score and come within a possession, but the Highlander defense, the big highlight of the second half, came up with another huge stop. This time, courtesy of Mac’s third interception, Montez Edwards sealed the game in the end zone.

Manning had this to say about his team’s focus.

“I just tell our guys to do their jobs, don’t worry about anything outside of that, and they did that tonight.”

Isaiah Gray, who ended the game with four total rushing touchdowns, three rushing and one kick return, 265 yards on the ground and 363 all-purpose yards, had this to say about his performance.

“It (the win) feels great! I can’t wait to see what this team brings at the end of the season.”

This game also put him at well over 1,000 yards rushing on the year and gave him 20+ touchdowns for the season. When asked about how hard he’s worked and to see it all pay off, he said that he would have to thank his coaches for everything they’ve done for him.

MacArthur remains undefeated and is set to take on Altus next week at home.

Noble took their first district loss last night and will look to bounce back against Southeast next Friday.

Apache Beats Walters, Improves to 1-1 in District Play

Friday night in Apache, Oklahoma, the Warriors and Blue Devils battled it out in a district matchup. Both teams were searching for some momentum halfway through the season to carry them and attempt to make a run at the post season. Defense and penalties played a huge role in this one as it wasn’t a clean game from either team.

Apache scored first in the game and took a 6-0 lead with 7:01 remaining in the first quarter. Walters created the first turnover of the game when Apache fumbled the ball late in the first. A missed Blue Devils field goal would end the first quarter and the Warriors remained on top.

Walters started the second off with an interception and after an added 15 yards off a penalty, started with the ball on their own 43-yard line. After two more Walters’ interceptions, the Blue Devils finally found the endzone with a one-yard touchdown rush from #30, Clay Graham, and tied the ball game.

With just 35 seconds left in the first half, the Warriors hit paydirt again on a one-yard rush from #10, Triton Ivy. The half ended on an interception from #20, Nick Lindsey, of the Warriors and Apache would head into the locker room up 12-6.

Early in the half, however, a small skirmish ensued as shoves were traded and a couple of punches thrown. This led to a player from each side being ejected and a chippy game followed. Head coach of the Warriors, Larry McDaniel, had this to say about his teams’ discipline.

“We just have to do a better job”, said McDaniel, “We can’t do that against the upper teams in the district. That will be something we talk about Sunday.”

The second half started slow for both teams. After trading punts and turnovers in the third quarter, the score remained 12-6 heading into the final frame.

The fourth quarter was all Apache. Early in the fourth, Apache pushed Walters all the back inside the five-yard line and blocked a punt that rolled out the back of the endzone and was ruled a safety. That made it 14-6 with 11:13 remaining.  The Warriors would block another punt later in the quarter. They would also add two more scores and cause another turnover to finish the game strong. Apache won 28-6 and is now 2-3 (1-1 A-4).

McDaniel had this to say about his teams’ performance.

“We struggled putting points on the board early… came out in the second half and played much better. We consider special teams apart of our defense and we take a lot of pride in our defense.”

Apache heads to Mangum next week.

Walters will face Hobart at home next Friday.

Temple Begins District Play with Shutout Victory

Friday night in Grandfield, Oklahoma, not more than few miles away from the Texas border, the Temple Tigers shutout the Grandfield Bearcats and secured their first victory of the season.

The Tigers jumped on the board early and never looked back. It started with a rushing touchdown from junior, #4, Jamarcus Tisdale with 10:12 in the first quarter. Tisdale would add a 34-yard rushing touchdown just 6 minutes later. Grandfield opened the game with four straight three and outs as the Temple defense was relentless. Quarterback, #3, Jake Smart, would add another rushing score from 35 yards out to end the first quarter. That score and two-point conversion made it 24-0, Temple.

The Bearcats found a little success in the second quarter when they finally secured their first 1st down of the game, but that triumph was short lived as the Tigers forced the first turnover of the game with 6:06 remaining in the first half. Temple would add two more takeaways and force several turnovers on downs. With just over two minutes remaining, Temple scored again and ended the half with a 30-0 lead.

Head Coach of the Tigers, Barry Giles, praised his team for their effort.

“We’ve talked all week about finishing and tonight they did it. They fought for everything they got, and the scoreboard took care of itself.”

The Grandfield defense found some life early in the third quarter, but the Tigers quickly bounced back and added another score. Smart would go on to score two more times and the game ended due to mercy rule with 2:00 remaining in the 3rd quarter. If you’re wondering why that is, the Class C, eight-man football rules, if a team is up by 45 points after one half, the game is over.

Smart scored six touchdowns and made several plays on defense for the Tigers. Giles stated that he is a natural leader, he makes sure kids are where they’re supposed to be and doing what they are supposed to be doing.

Jake Smart had this to say about his leadership.

“It is really about staying focused during practice. If I can get the guys fired up, it usually carries over onto the field.”

Smart is also very happy with the new offense Temple has implemented. He said they scrapped the old one a couple weeks ago and things are beginning to flow for them on that side of the ball.

Temple will host Fox next week for homecoming.

Grandfield will play Maysville next week for week two of district play.

Apache Warriors Shut Out Rush Springs, Earn First Victory of Season

The Rush Springs Redskins hosted the Apache Warriors Friday night for an old rivalry game. It was a slow first quarter, but the Warriors got on the board first with a pick six. Nic Lindsey, #20, returned the interception to make it 6-0. They would also add a 2-point conversion and the score was 8-0 with 7:05 remaining in the 1stquarter.

Lindsey and the Warriors would go on to have a monster 2nd quarter and add 3 scores to their total: making it 30-0 at the half. Quarterback Triton Ivy scored a 29-yard touchdown and a 2-point conversion. Lindsey added the other 2, a 1-yard rush and then a 30 yarder to end the half.

Rush Springs started the 2nd half with some life as they caused Apache to fumble the ball, but that wouldn’t last as the Warrior defense proved tough and completed the shutout. The defense put an exclamation point on the game with a blocked punt halfway through the 4th.

Head coach of the Warriors, Larry McDaniel, was proud of his team

“Injuries have taken a toll on us early,” he said, “we challenge the defense to a shutout all week long and they came up big tonight.” – Coach McDaniel

McDaniel also said that they are excited about the coming weeks. His team should be healthy as they are off one week and play Walters in two. He expects them to stay bought in and positive.

“A lot of teams, when you’re 0-3 and have high expectations, have a lot of chances to get down and discouraged, but these guys haven’t.” – Coach McDaniel

Apache (1-3) has a bye week and then will face the Walters Blue Devils to start district play. Rush Springs (0-3) will face the Dibble Demons next week as they look for their first win of the year.
