Carl Albert Gets 2nd Thrilling Win.
The month of October can bring many surprises. From turbulent weather patterns that can creep up last minute to unpredictable finishes in high school football. Such was just the case Friday night at Bishop McGuiness High School.
When anyone mentions Carl Albert and Bishop McGuiness, it's like saying OU-Texas. On the Friday before the Red River Rivalry, these two met again to decide a possible district championship. It may be early to declare that, but this is how it always would be and would come down to these two teams in the end. No wonder they have played the last 4 out of 5 State Championship games against each other in 5A.
The Titan-Irish game would end in overtime for the first time in years.
First-year Carl Albert head Mike Dunn explained, "We practice overtime every day in practice"
He probably did not know he would need it for this game Friday night.
The two rivals would go back and forth all night, with Bishop McGuiness taking the opening drive and scored first. However, the Irish would miss the all-important PAT and led 6-0. Carl Albert responded and answered with points but still trailed at the half. Carl Albert took over the 3rd quarter and even led 21-20 heading into the 4th quarter. When Carl Albert seemed to have iced the clock in the final seconds of regulation.McGuiness marched 75 yards down the field and made it 28-26 games with 16 seconds left. On the 2 point conversion, the ensuing run fumbled in the end zone, and a pile of players went into the corner of the end zone.
After Referees sorted out the pile and the players, a Fighting Irish player emerged with the ball, and the score tied up. These two bitter rivals were heading to overtime. Carl Albert won the toss and elected to pick defense. Two plays for the boys in green, and the Irish found their way in the endzone. Still, the night belonged to returning Carl Albert two-way starter Tashawn James who had been out a couple of weeks due to injury, returned in a tremendous way and blocked the extra point. Carl Albert would score and kick the PAT to win 35-34. Carl Albert quarterback Reed DeQuasie, a junior, completed 8 of 11 for 176 yards, ran for 70, and threw two touchdowns with the overtime win.
Carl Albert will face the last team to beat them in the regular season 2 years ago. Piedmont will travel to take on Carl Albert, and you can watch the game live on OSN.
