OSN Power Rankings
Josh Callaway January 21st, 2021
The high school basketball season is rolling on into late January and this is where the games start to really pick up significant importance.
The amount of time to improve your resume for the postseason is shrinking, but the opportunities are still there.
A rough patch or a hot streak could be the difference in playoff positioning that helps you make a run or go out early. This is go time.
As we push onward through the month of January, here are the latest OSN Power Rankings.
LARGE SCHOOLS (BOYS)
#1 Edmond Memorial – Last Week: #1
Edmond Memorial stays at the top spot after a 71-44 thrashing of a solid Yukon team last Friday. They unfortunately had their game with Norman North get postponed. That would have been a fantastic matchup, but that’s the nature of the season we are in. It is hard to justify moving them down at this point, but their matchup with Edmond North next week is going to tell us a lot.
#2 Kingfisher – Last Week: #2
The Yellow Jackets are so good. Like, so so good. It was extremely tempting to move them up to the #1 spot after their blowout wins over Tuttle, Clinton and Blanchard this week, but given they still have their lone loss early in the year to Edmond Memorial…it was hard to make that move. But, they are very close.
#3 Carl Albert – Last Week: #4
The Titans picked up their biggest win of the year last week when they knocked off Heritage Hall – a team that has been toward the top of our rankings all season long. They have simply earned this jump into the top-3 and belong in the conversation amongst the elite teams in the state.
#4 Edmond North – Last Week: #5
#5 Heritage Hall – Last Week: #3
#6 Lawton MacArthur – Last Week: #6
#7 Memorial – Last Week: #7
#8 Crossings Christian – Last Week: #8
#9 Hugo – Last Week: #9
#10 Norman North – Last Week: #10
LARGE SCHOOLS (GIRLS)
#1 Norman – Last Week: #1
Norman’s vice grip on the top spot got a lot tighter after their long-awaited matchup with Edmond North went down with them coming out on top 69-62. They also knocked off a very good Moore team since our last rankings as well. Their resume is fantastic and they’ve beaten some of the best, the #1 ranking is deservedly theirs.
#2 Union – Last Week: #4
Union has done nothing but keep winning and steadily climbing up our rankings. They rivaled Norman’s impressive Edmond North win with a big-time 68-49 victory over Sapulpa. They are 12-0 and looked to have separated themselves from the pack along with Norman.
#3 Edmond North – Last Week: #2
Edmond North hangs onto their top-3 spot since they are still an obviously great team with a competitive loss to a sensational Norman squad. It will be hard for them to climb back up and over the teams in front of them without playing either of them for the remainder of the season, but they still have some resume-builders left on their schedule.
#4 Tuttle – Last Week: #5
#5 Sapulpa – Last Week: #3
#6 Weatherford – Last Week: #6
#7 Ft. Gibson – Last Week: #7
#8 Roland – Last Week: #8
#9 Anadarko – Last Week: #9
#10 Classen SAS – Last Week: NR
SMALL SCHOOLS (BOYS)
#1 Hydro-Eakly – Last Week: #2
We have a new No. 1 team among the small schools. Hydro-Eakly is 13-0 and has just kept winning while the teams around them have slipped up. They have earned the spot due to being among the most consistent teams in the entire state, and they’ll have more chances to prove themselves by month’s end.
#2 Varnum – Last Week: #5
Varnum climbs into the No. 2 ranking for reasons very similar to Hydro-Eakly. They just keep winning. A 14-0 record in this tumultuous high school basketball season is wildly impressive. There are good wins peppered throughout their schedule and they have to be considered among the elite teams right now.
#3 Hooker – Last Week: #3
Hooker stays at No. 3 despite dropping their first game of the season thanks to two reasons. Firstly that they are still really darn good with lots of good wins. The second being they benefit a bit from teams around them in the rankings falling. Roff’s loss and Dale’s losses help them here, but they still are very good and deserve to be up high on their own merrit.
#4 Oklahoma Union – Last Week: #6
#5 Ft. Cobb-Broxton – Last Week: #7
#6 Roff – Last Week: #1
#7 Cashion – Last Week: NR
#8 Dale – Last Week: #4
#9 Calumet – Last Week: #8
#10 Pawnee – Last Week: #10
SMALL SCHOOLS (GIRLS)
#1 Vanoss – Last Week: #1
Vanoss is 16-0. Do I even need to say anything else? They have been the top team in our rankings for over a month now because they just won’t stop winning. It is impossible to move them off.
#2 Lomega – Last Week: #2
Lomega stands at 12-0 and just scored 111 (!) points in a blowout win over Ringwood on Tuesday night. It is totally within reason to think they may completely run the table through the regular season. Not only can they score obscene numbers, they play defense. They held Deer Creek-Lamont to only four points the entire game last week. That is not a typo, they won the game 92-4.
#3 Dale – Last Week: #3
Dale is really good. They may not be undefeated like Vanoss and Lomega, but they did avenge their only loss of the season against another top team in Silo. They have won nine straight games with several impressive victories along the way, they deserve a lot of credit.
#4 Silo – Last Week: #4
#5 Hydro-Eakly – Last Week: #5
#6 Howe – Last Week: #6
#7 Crowder – Last Week: #7 #8 Amber-Pocasset – Last Week: #9 #9 Varnum – Last Week: #10 #10 Seiling – Last Week: NR
