OSN Time Out
Josh Callaway | November 19, 2020
The playoffs are in full swing as we enter the second round this week.
For some classes that means the quarterfinals, others the final 16, and others still operating with 32 schools in action.
But what is universal, is that this is where it gets good.
Last weekend most of the top title contenders weren’t really tested due to playing teams that finished toward the bottom of their district or having the week off entirely. That won’t be the case this time.
Everyone who remains is a good team and can win on any given day. Get your popcorn ready, this is the second round.
Here are the fantastic games you can watch this week for FREE on the Oklahoma Sports Network.
DEL CITY @ BIXBY (6A-II Quarterfinal)
Del City is one of the hottest teams in the state, Bixby is Bixby. Sign me up.
The Eagles started the season 0-5, albeit against a really tough schedule. Since then, they have won four straight games including a 41-7 blowout win over Ponca City in the first round last week.
They’ll be huge underdogs against the goliath that is Bixby, but with the confidence they have right now it is certainly possible they will play above their skis and make this interesting.
The Spartans are still 8-0 after having a bye last week, so they are bound to be antsy to retake the field to begin their postseason quest for the state title.
BOOKER T WASHINGTON @ MIDWEST CITY (6A-II Quarterfinal)
The winner of that Del City-Bixby contest will catch the winner of this one in the semifinals.
Booker T Washington responded to their blowout loss to Bixby on national television by smacking Lawton in the first round last week 56-14.
Midwest City, meanwhile, is fresh off a 39-0 shutout win over Muskogee.
Simply put, these are two really good teams that both look to punch their ticket to 6A-II’s final four.
This is a huge opportunity for both programs to get themselves just two wins away from a championship. Both teams come in having won seven games this season and want to make it to eight, this one is going to be good.
DUNCAN @ BISHOP MCGUINESS (5A 2nd Round – Final 16)
Both Duncan and Bishop McGuiness come into this second round matchup riding three-game winning streaks and are playing good football at the right time.
The Demons are fresh off a 21-3 first round win over Lawon Eisenhower and are playing well at 5-3 on the season.
The Fighting Irish had the week off in the first round, and have been one of the more impressive 5A teams all year long at 7-2.
This has the makings of a fascinating matchup, with the winner drawing the winner of Coweta-Claremore in the quarterfinals.
ARDMORE @ CARL ALBERT (5A 2nd Round – Final 16)
In my opinion, any time you have a chance to watch Carl Albert you do it.
The dynasty of 5A begins their quest for a fifth consecutive state championship at home Friday night against an Ardmore team that has had a bit of an up and down year
Amazingly, the Tigers have only had the same result two weeks in a row once this year – and that came all the way back when they opened the season 2-0. Since then, it’s been loss, win, loss, win, etc.
Obviously, they won last week in the first round, can they pull the stunner here on the road against the Titans? Find out on OSN Friday night.
GUTHRIE @ LAWTON MACARTHUR (5A 2nd Round – Final 16)
This is one of the most interesting matchups of the week, in my opinion.
I have a hard time knowing what to expect here, as these schools share no common opponents and have very similar records at 6-2 (MacArthur) and 5-2 (Guthrie).
Where they differ, though, is how they have been playing lately.
MacArthur has won four straight games and is performing at a high level right now and that continued into last week’s 37-22 first round win over Ardmore.
Guthrie is the complete opposite end of the spectrum, as they somehow have not won a game since, brace yourself, October 15th.
Now, granted, they have only played twice since then (which is kind of amazing in it of itself), but still.
Two teams with opposite levels of momentum right now, the winner gets a crack at one of the very best teams in 5A next week: Collinsville.
NEWCASTLE @ TUTTLE (4A 2nd Round – Final 16)
With risk of sounding a bit biased since I will be calling this game for OSN – this is one of the best games in the entire state this week.
It is a rivalry game, a rematch, between two very good teams. It is going to be electric inside Bill Hinkle Field on Friday night and will be a blast to see in person.
When these two met the first time, way back in September, Tuttle got the win on a blocked field goal in the final minutes to hang on 24-21.
I expect another great game between these two teams that have a combined record of 17-3. Winner gets the winner of Wagoner-Sallisaw.
If you like high school football at all, this is one to pay attention to Friday night on OSN.
TECUMSEH @ BLANCHARD (4A 2nd Round – Final 16)
One of the biggest rule changes that caught the eye of everyone when they were announced a month ago was that in the event a team had a COVID outbreak, the team they beat the previous week would have the opportunity to replace them in the next round.
That is what we get here in Tecumseh-Blanchard.
First off, I want to send my thoughts out to the players and people of Cache – who beat Tecumseh last week and should be playing in this game against Blanchard.
I had said multiple times I thought the Bulldogs had a real shot to upset the Lions, but now we won’t get the chance to see it unfortunately.
But, Tecumseh won’t be an easy out here by any means. They lost to Blanchard in the first meeting 34-14, but having a second crack at them could help them close the gap from that first collision.
This game is fascinating just from the intrigue of a team who was eliminated last week being given a second life. I know I’ll be keeping a close eye on this one.
CHAMPIONSHIP PICKS UPDATE
Not that there was much risk of it this early, but none of the teams I selected to win state titles last week have been eliminated yet – so that’s good.
Granted they all had bye weeks – but let’s just pretend I nailed a bunch of picks instead, that makes me look better. .
In case you missed it, here were my picks from last week. I’ll be updating this as we go along the next few weeks with how I’m doing.
